Havant and Waterlooville Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of England ‘C’ International Tommy Wright from Sutton United on a three year contract.

Manager Paul Doswell was pleased to get the signing done in readiness for next season and believes that the Club have got a special player on their hands.

“I’ve known Tommy since he was nine years old, and watched him develop into a fantastic young footballer.

“He’s coming to a Club, where he is very aware of all the staff including his best friend Scott Munro, the clubs sports analyst along with many of our players so the settling in process will be much easier.

“Obviously I had Tommy for four years at Sutton United, and in that first season we loaned him to Salisbury to get him experience in men’s football where he scored over 50 goals.

“The following season was his breakthrough at The National League level where he had an outstanding all round season scoring 20 league and cup goals and winning the young player of the year trophy at the National Game Awards. At the end of that season he earned his first England ‘C’ cap in a friendly against Republic of Ireland.

“He made a similar start in the next season scoring 13 goals in just 22 appearances that attracted many Championship and League 1 clubs making enquiries about him until he suffered his unfortunate cruciate ligament injury against Leyton Orient.

“It’s fair to say he has had a difficult 18 months since then, with the long recovery from the injury and subsequent mental health issues.

“By being closer to home knowing the staff so well and his desire to play football I’m sure Tommy will be back up to speed in no time.”

Tommy Wright was also delighted to get the move done. “It’s no secret that I really struggled in my last year at Sutton with the travelling up on my own, and subsequent health issues that it caused.

“However, I now feel very much on the road to recovery and I can’t wait to get back on the football pitch again, it’s been too long.

“I would like to thank in particular Bruce Elliot at Sutton United and Matt Gray for helping me in this last year and I will always treasure the time I had at Sutton.”
