Roberts, 27, played his trade in the Youth section at Wycombe Wanderers before being picked up by Oxford United in 2012. He broke into their first team set up 2 years later where he featured over 25 times in all competitions during the 2014/15 Season for the then EFL League Two club. During his 4 years as a senior Oxford player, James had loan spells with Chester, Barnet, Oxford City, Chelmsford City and Guiseley before he left the club in 2018. A few months later, James joined Hereford where he would play for the remainder of 18/19 while also having a short loan spell to Alvechurch. Spennymoor Town would be the next destination for James before moving to a former club in Oxford City on a permanent basis. The forward joined the Hawks in 2021 for the start of the 21/22 season which he spent the second half of on loan at fellow National League South side Hampton & Richmond Borough. James has made around 100 appearances during his time with the Hawks.
