Matthews, 26, started his career at AFC Bournemouth while gaining experience out on loan away from the Cherries. Before he departed for Bristol Rovers in 2018, Sam spent 6 months with Braintree and had 18 months on loan across two spells with Eastleigh. When he joined Bristol Rovers in 2018 for the 18/19 season he would join Eastleigh on loan once again later in that campaign which would include a play-off campaign that saw him hit over 60 appearances for Eastleigh. After 2 years with Bristol Rovers Sam made a move to EFL League Two side Crawley Town where he would make over 40 appearances across 2 seasons. In that time Matthews also had a short term loan with National League Premier Division side Aldershot Town. After leaving Crawley Sam joined Wealdstone where he would be for a few months before joining the Hawks in January 2023.
