From the Manager

Havant & Waterlooville manager Paul Doswell has heaped praise on his side as he sees them put six past a previously unbeaten Dorking Wanderers team, in what was a very one-sided clash on Wednesday.

In a thrilling encounter which ended six nil in favour to the hosts it’s safe to say Doswell was more than happy about the performance.

“It was an exceptional team performance, I’m probably just as pleased about getting a clean sheet because, I think defensively we have given away too many goals so getting a clean sheet was important.”

The Hawks haven’t kept a clean sheet in the three games played in the league this season, and with the visit of Dorking who haven’t lost a game this campaign it was going to be no easy task for the defence to keep the visitors out.

Doswell went on to explain how the in-depth preparations for the match were essential as the work being done when out of possession and knowing how Dorking set up was key in the victory.

“Playing Simon Walton and Nicky Bailey in the back four tonight made us more solid, perhaps more leaders as well in there. The performance was mainly off the ball because I thought we knew what Dorking were going to try and do, we knew how they would try and pass the ball through us.

“The work rate off the ball was outstanding, you can see how hard the lads work in training and the fitness levels that Ian Baird has got them up to.

“We sat down with the video yesterday and showed the team how we wanted them to play and I thought the lads did it to perfection. The main thing was when we turned the ball over like the 16 occasions in the first half, we scored from three of those.

“When they’ve tried to be clever, we’ve nicked the ball and got goals from it so an all round really good performance and I think it is a hard choice to pick who was the best player out there.

Doswell then went on to mention how he wanted his team to become more ruthless in the league and how the result against The Wanderers has showed the side to The Hawks that hasn’t been seen this season.

“I felt we started slowly in the first three games against Welling, Hampton and Dartford. One of the things we worked on this week was to move the ball quickly and trying to make sure very pass is a positive one.

“Tonight, was a five star performance it was everything that as a manager and as a coach that you like to see.”
